Crushing
I wouldn’t want to slight the other seasons, because I find something wonderful in each, but I have a really big crush on spring. As soon as I toss last year’s calendar, my fingers start itching to flip ahead to March.
Spring. Something fresh bounces to mind at the very name. A season filled with promise—flowers budding, birds warbling, runners, walkers, and bikers coming out in force. Life hums again.
If I had a time machine, I’d set the dial for 1948, the sunniest spring on record. Oh how I’d love to soak up the 558 sunshine hours recorded that year.
Spring fever? It’s not just one of those old wives' tales. Different diets, hormone production, and the warming temperature actually change the body’s makeup this time of year.
Fun fact: The fall and spring equinoxes are the only two times during the year when the sun rises due east and sets due west. And if Pope Gregory XIII hadn’t established the Gregorian calendar in 1582, then every 128 years the vernal equinox would come a full calendar day earlier, eventually putting Easter in midwinter.
Imagine kids hunting Easter eggs like this!
What’s your story? Anything about this time of year, or any time of year, make you giddy?
